Senior Spotlight: Esther Otten

As graduation draws near, we’re sitting down with the class of 2023 to talk about their time at Sioux Falls Lutheran School and what the future holds.

Name: Esther Otten

Accepted to: Lake Area Technical College

Intended field of study: Medical Laboratory Technician

How did you decide on a school/field of study?
My father and mother had mentioned the technical school when I was sixteen years old and I told them about my career choice, and they told me to go for a two year school.

What makes Lake Area Technical College a good fit for you?
The college has a large campus with labs for each field of science. I have seen the campus only twice, but I already like the classes that are offered at the college.

How did you feel when you received the news of your acceptance?
I was overjoyed to hear that I was accepted into the college, and my family was very supportive and happy for me getting into my dream college.

Which classes, programs, and/or faculty at Sioux Falls Lutheran School helped support your interest in your planned field of study?
I learned a lot during my junior year, since I was taking chemistry. While they aren’t core courses, I also enjoyed and learned a lot from taking band and choir. In choir, I learned how to change my voice to match the rest of the group, and while in band I learned how to play all kinds of percussion instruments. Since Med Lab Technicians use different machines to find the cause of the disease, I think these skills will translate well into my field of study.

Are there any other activities that had a significant impact on you during your time at SFLS?
I enjoyed my time on the girls basketball team and being a part of the math competition team. My favorite activities were marching band, concerts, and school dances.

What advice would you share with underclassmen at SFLS?
My advice to the underclassmen is to see every day as an opportunity for improvement, encouragement, and to change yourself for the better. Also, remember this: “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift, that is why it is called the present.” Lastly, never forget that God made you special and he loves you very much.

What is your favorite Bible verse?
“And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’” –Matthew 28:18-20
