Preschools Located in Elementary Schools—Does It Matter?

When choosing a preschool for your child, there are many factors to consider—educational philosophy, teacher qualifications, class sizes, and curriculum. But have you ever thought about how the location of a preschool might impact a child’s development and future academic success? According to a recent study by the American Medical Association, it matters more than you might think.
The Research: Location and Long-Term Success
This study examined the long-term effects of full-day preschool attendance, specifically comparing children who attended preschool within an elementary school to those who did not. The findings were both compelling and somewhat unexpected. Students enrolled in preschool programs housed within an elementary school performed significantly better academically in both reading and math. Even more strikingly, they demonstrated stronger emotional regulation skills and were three times less likely to repeat a grade.
So, why does preschool placement within an elementary school make such a difference? Researchers identified several key factors:
- Seamless Collaboration – Schools where preschool and elementary teachers work closely together foster a unified approach to education. Teachers collaborate to align curriculum, maximize professional development, and share best practices.
- Stronger Teacher Training – When educators across multiple grade levels engage in shared professional development, they can more effectively support each child’s unique learning journey, whether that means offering enrichment for advanced learners or providing extra support for those who need it.
- Smooth Transitions – Moving from preschool to kindergarten can be a big step for young children. But when preschoolers are already part of an elementary school environment, the transition feels natural, reducing anxiety and setting them up for success.

A Commitment to Collaboration at Sioux Falls Lutheran School

At Sioux Falls Lutheran School (SFLS), we embrace these research-backed practices to give our students a strong foundation for lifelong learning. Our PreK-12th grade teachers regularly collaborate on curriculum development and best practices, ensuring consistency and excellence in education.
Recently, our entire teaching staff participated in a shared training on trauma-informed practices, equipping them with strategies to help students build coping skills and confidence at every stage of their education. These professional development opportunities occur multiple times each year, reinforcing our culture of collaboration.
Additionally, the physical layout of our school fosters natural interaction between preschoolers and elementary students. Our kindergarten classrooms are located within the preschool wing, giving younger students daily opportunities to observe and engage with their older peers. This intentional design supports smoother transitions and builds a sense of familiarity and comfort as children move into kindergarten and beyond.
At SFLS, we are intentional about helping every student feel known, valued, and supported—academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually. Our commitment to collaboration and continuity ensures that children receive the best possible start to their education.
