Meet Our New 4th Grade Teacher Alexis Urban

Sioux Falls Lutheran School is pleased to welcome Miss Alexis Urban to the SFLS family! She will join our 4th grade teaching team as we add a second section of 4th grade during the 2025-26 school year.

Miss Urban will graduate this spring from Concordia University, Nebraska (CUNE) with a Bachelor of Science degree in education, a concentration in social science, and a Lutheran Teaching Diploma. Her student teaching experiences this spring include teaching 3rd and 4th grade at St. Paul Lutheran in Utica, Nebraska, and teaching kindergarten in David City, Nebraska.

During her time at CUNE, Miss Urban was involved in many activities, including the Student Activity Council. She appreciates the ways CUNE helped her grow in her faith by providing opportunities to engage in worship and fellowship in a supportive Christian community.

Check out the Q&A below to learn more about Miss Urban and her passion for education.

Tell me a bit about yourself and your family.
I am originally from Sioux City, Iowa. I graduated from Siouxland Christian School in 2021 and went on to pursue a degree at Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska. In my free time, I like to paint, go on walks, travel, and enjoy the company of my friends and family. I love visiting my hometown to spend time with my parents and younger sister, Lyssie. I got engaged last October to Bryce Needham, who is studying K-12 physical education at CUNE. I am very excited to become part of the SFLS family.

How did you decide to pursue a career in education?
I decided to pursue a career in education because of the teachers I had growing up. Going to a Lutheran elementary school, my teachers were able to not only teach me academically, but also spiritually. They showed me that they valued me and wanted me to have a strong relationship with God. They were great examples of sharing God’s love and light to the world. They truly inspired me to pursue a career in education so that I can provide a safe and loving environment where my students can learn and grow academically, socially, and spiritually.

Tell me a bit about your teaching style.
I would describe my teaching style as student-centered and engaging. I love providing my students with hands-on activities and experiences in order to give them authentic learning opportunities, which fuel student inquiry and a desire for more learning.

What do you enjoy most about working with 4th grade students?
I enjoy working with 4th grade students because they have such great curiosity and creativity. They not only want to know how things work, but also why they do. They often have insightful ideas and questions, which leads to deeper critical thinking. Fourth graders also do a great job of applying their learning to their lives, including their spiritual growth. It is truly special to see God working through students.

What is your favorite Bible verse?
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.” –Romans 8:28
