Middle School at SFLS

Prepared Minds Glorifying God

Think back to when you were a teenager, and you’ll recall how important the middle school years are. Just like those years helped form you, they’ll play a significant role in shaping who your child becomes and the influential relationships they’ll make. Middle school is a time when children are exploring their talents, beliefs, and dreams for the future, and their environment and peers have a tremendous impact on all of those areas.

At Sioux Falls Lutheran School, we are passionate about providing our middle school students with the tools they need to be successful — academically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually. Our challenging academics help each child pursue excellence as they prepare for high school and beyond. Along the way, quality Christian teachers encourage and support students in a safe, caring, and peace-filled community.

Joyful Community That Feels Like Family

Thanks to our small school size, we’re able to offer encouragement and support to each middle schooler and inspire connectedness by providing:

Engagement between grade levels:

Middle school students participate in numerous multi-grade activities, including music programs, chapel services, homecoming activities and field day. In 7th grade, they’re also able to spend time interacting and reading with preschoolers.

Community and leadership development:

While these skills develop throughout middle school, they get specific focus during our 8th grade Leadership and Earth Science Camp in the Black Hills. Students develop soft skills and deepen their relationship with God and one another as they set up camp and prepare meals, engage in small group devotions, and participate in new activities that may lie outside their comfort zone while visiting sites like Badlands National Park, Wind Cave, Sylvan Lake, Evans Plunge, Mount Rushmore, the Mammoth Site of Hot Springs, and more.

Authentic relationship building:

Our intimate classes allow teachers to be intentional in building relationships with each middle schooler. Additionally, our family-like atmosphere helps students develop positive friendships that can last a lifetime.

Focus on peacemaking practices:

We integrate resources from PeaceWiseYouth to teach students Christ-centered conflict resolution and reconciliation skills meant to serve them well throughout the course of their lives — as friends, employees, spouses, parents, and community members.

As our kids have entered the middle and high school years, we’ve realized that the other Christian voices in their lives are getting more and more important. We appreciate all the great Christian role models and influences at SFLS who are not only allowed to speak into their lives, but encouraged each and every day to talk to them about their relationship with Jesus. That was too much for us to pass up.

Academic Excellence

In addition to core subjects, middle schoolers take art, music, physical education, and Spanish, and science lessons are enhanced within our new STEM lab. Our distinctive middle school music program includes classroom music, band, choir, orchestra, tone chimes, and guitar ensemble.

Engaging Extracurriculars

Beginning in 6th grade, students can participate on athletic teams, which compete locally with other class B schools. Other middle school extracurriculars include various music, theatre, math, and STEM-based activities, as well as camps during the summer.

Daily Physical Activity

Because we know the impact physical movement has on academics, behavior, and overall health, recess continues to be part of the school day in middle school. Students also experience movement throughout the day during classroom “brain boosts” and PE. Soon, our student athletes will benefit from a new 4,700 square foot fitness center, which is currently under construction.

Enriching Experiences

Middle schoolers participate in a variety of experiential learning opportunities (field trips) including team building at Inspiration Hills, mission activities and a trip to the zoo in Omaha, and our annual 8th grade Leadership and Earth Science Camp in the Black Hills. As we launch programming in our new STEM lab, middle school also brings the introduction of career and technical education opportunities.

Skills to Succeed in High School

Everything we do at Sioux Falls Lutheran School is designed to help your child thrive. The result? Our middle schoolers are confident, responsible individuals who are well prepared for high school.

Eighth graders have the option to earn high school credit in Spanish I and Algebra I. This allows students to take more advanced coursework and college classes during their high school years.

Our middle school is departmentalized, meaning that students move about the building during the day to receive instruction from different teachers, all of whom hold specialized degrees within their specific subject area.

Our faculty and staff are committed to partnering with parents and the church to raise lifelong learners who use their gifts and the fruit of the Spirit, in faith, to touch a troubled world with God’s grace.

A Safe Place to Learn and Grow

Our teachers and faculty value their relationships with students and are dedicated to creating a safe space for each child to share any issues and concerns they’re experiencing. This relationship extends to middle school parents, too, with collaboration and communication being key.

Through the study of God’s word and PeaceWiseYouth, we’re able to help students develop conflict resolution and reconciliation skills, promote healthy dynamics and relationships, and foster emotional and spiritual safety.

Moreover, we partner with Carroll Institute to provide in-house one-on-one counseling for students if needed. Counselors also spend time in classrooms covering a variety of topics, including bullying.

Additionally, our faculty and staff are trained on a variety of internal procedures to safeguard all students under their supervision, and our new state-of-the-art campus was designed with safety in mind. There are always members of the leadership team at school entry points during high traffic times, and visitors must check in at the front office with school staff.
